According to The Baltimore Business Journal, there is a court battle going on over who gets to spend UMUC's 6.5 million dollar ad budget. I have seen their newspaper ads from time to time, but I had no idea that the university is spending that much money on advertising. I wonder if that is my tax money or my tuition money? Personally I think the money would be better spent on scholarships.

Quote:
The Maryland State Board of Contract Appeals has denied Eisner Communications Inc.'s appeal of a state university's controversial decision to recommend a New York firm for its $6.5 million advertising account.

In its decision, the board determined that the University of Maryland University College's recommendation of Grey Direct "represents the best value to the state and should receive this contract. That is their legal duty."

Eisner is now mulling its options -- whether to appeal the decision to a Maryland circuit court or take its case before the Board of Public Works when it makes a decision on the award, said Eisner Attorney Philip M. Andrews, of Baltimore law firm Kramon & Graham PA. Eisner has until April 11 to decide whether to appeal. The case is not on the schedule of the Board of Public Works' next meeting March 30, according to a spokesman.

"Eisner is surprised and disappointed," in the decision, Andrews said.

Late last year, Baltimore's largest advertising agency filed an appeal with the state to protest UMUC's decision on the grounds that the New York firm did not meet many of the marketing proposal's minority business and other requirements.

Officials at Grey Direct, the direct marketing unit of Grey Global Group Inc., could not be reached for comment. UMUC officials could not be reached for comment.

In July, the Baltimore Business Journal reported that UMUC had selected Grey Direct for a two-year advertising contract, which includes three one-year renewal options. The decision, which has yet to go before the Board of Public Works, prompted outrage among local advertising executives who felt that a Maryland taxpayer-funded institution should not let New York agencies reap the rewards of the multimillion dollar contract. UMUC's incumbent, Carton Donofrio Partners Inc., has held the account since 1999.

Article from the Baltimore Business Journal

Perhaps the university justifies this expense because more students means more tuition. Does the ad campaign pay for itself through the tuition of the recruited students? Is this the best use of UMUC funds? Where would you spend the money?

The advertising idea is Gerald Heeger's idea. Heeger is quoted in a student newspaper as saying "Good universities make money." I don't know who gives the money. US taxpayer dollars do support the military programs in Europe and Asia, and through student TAP in the States. Heeger too has made money. His paycheck from UMUC has risen by about 100% since joining UMUC 5 years ago, according to the same UMUC student newspaper. How many Americans get a 100% pay increase for spending taxpayer dollars?

Where did you get your information? The student newspaper you are referring to, I assume, is news@umuc. I couldn't find the article you are quoting from.

While news@umuc has some interesting articles and good information, I don't think it qualifies much as a student newspaper. As far as I can tell, there is not a single article written by a student. It also only comes out four times a year. I hope this website will become a student newspaper of sorts. If there is anyone interested in writing articles that will appear on the main page, please contact me at UMUCreview@gmail.com.
